This is Mr. Bill:

When you squeeze Mr. Bill he lets out an “Oh Noooooooooooooo!” and Shadow comes running, no matter where he is in the house.

He loves Mr. Bill. He takes him everywhere, shows him off, and every time he accidentally bites him in just the right place and makes him say “Oh nooooooooooo!”, he drops him and stares at him with wonder and interest as if it’s the most interesting thing in the world; as if he’s hearing it for the first time.

When you communicate and relate to your customers, both on and off-line, do you have that sense of wonder? Whether they are there for the first time or the hundredth time, are you excited to see them? When you engage with them on Twitter or Facebook, do you have a high level of enthusiasm?

Shadow should be your role model. Do what he does, but try not to squeeze your customers too hard or slobber on them.

You are Shadow. Your customers are Mr. Bill.

Any questions?

@kmueller62 - we have Saharan dust in our atmosphere today - so things are weird (as usual)! How's PA?

The message here is so simple and yet so profound - thanks for sharing this Ken.

We just posted a customer experience "doggie bloggie" of our own yesterday - Shadow, meet Otis and Rosie! http://is.gd/sI6az3

Perhaps we should get the three of them together to compare notes about excellent customer service!

I just love this! I often look to my dogs for life lessons.  As soon as my alarm goes off in the morning, before the mere thought of even beginning to snooze has begun to cross my mind, I hear the happy thump-thump of Dawson's tail and am reminded that it is very possible to wake up happy, full of excitement and wonder at the thought of getting to live another day. I was dealing with one of my more...labour intensive customers today. I kept reminding myself to be patient and pleasant, even after 20 minutes of discussing what "blocked pop-up" means, and was rewarded with his sincere thanks. And THAT, I truly believe, is my job. Thank you.

@RebeccaTodd Oh, those labor intensive customers....And I have a whole bunch of Shadow related posts and videos here on the blog. I'll have to pull them back out sometime and do a theme week when I need a break...

My dog gets a special rawhide treat twice a year -- on Christmas, and on his birthday. He loves it so much that he turns into a devil dog when he's got it between his paws and snarls at anyone who gets close enough to "steal" it. Some healthy competition seems okay in business, but maybe not snarling at your competitors...or wait, maybe that IS a good idea?!

Love posts like this. Our dog, Bertie, who is a fair bit of a toy snob has a new duck that she gets pretty excited about. If we could get THAT excited about customers, it would transform organizations. There are a lot of lessons we should learn from our dogs, kudos on finding a sound business lesson!

@adamtoporek I have a whole slew of posts about lessons from Shadow. The funny thing is, he's the same way with us. If I leave the house for one minute and come back, he greets me as if I had been gone for months. He's just crazy that way.
