There are three images I never want to see on Facebook. Sadly, I see them all too often:

This is the default image on personal profiles. When I see this, it means that you haven’t uploaded a photo of yourself. More often than not I see this from someone who a) is new to Facebook, b) doesn’t take Facebook seriously and rarely uses it, c) is from an older demographic, or d) all of the above. But think about it: Facebook is initially for connecting with people who are already your friends. They know what you look like, and, in most cases, I’m sure they’d rather see your smiling face than stare at this generic silhouette. But if you really like the silhouette look, check out these variations for the default that are at least a bit more interesting.

This is the default image for your Facebook business page. If I see this, it tells me you don’t really care about your business. Would you publish a brochure that says “We have a logo, but we couldn’t get it to the printer on time.” If you own a business, upload an image of your logo, your building, some of your products, or even a picture of you or your employees. Something. Anything.

This is the one I see most often: the default image for an event that you create on Facebook. See! It’s a calendar page. And no matter what date you choose for your event, it will always look like it’s on the 31st. Even in February! Seriously, though, if you create a Facebook event, upload an image. Again, it can be your logo, or something even remotely related to the event.
A lot of times people scan their news feed by using images to determine what they read. We train ourselves to look for avatars with which we are familiar. We learn to spot the familiar pictures of our friends as we scroll. If there are too many default avatars, well…it gets confusing.
Oh, and as a bonus, even though we’re on the topic of Facebook, there’s another image I really don’t want to see:

This is the default “egg” avatar for Twitter. If I see this on your tweets, it tells me that you’re a) lazy, b) don’t know what you’re doing, c) don’t care, or d) yep…All of the above. I find it especially annoying if I see this on an account for a business.
Alright, got it? And since I know that none of my readers are guilty of any of these offenses (quick! scramble and check!), I hereby deputize you all to go out and call out your friends who may be guilty. Tell them that if they don’t upload images for these various pages and accounts, you’ll start uploading embarrassing pictures of them from high school….
