I shouldn’t be blogging or doing other marketing types of things. Those of you who know me also know that I’m not very good at that.

But as I sit here staring at all the unfinished blog posts and ideas sitting in my drafts folder, I discover that nothing is grabbing me. Nothing I want to write about. Yeah, I got nothing, even though last year I decided to use the opportunity of my birthday to get profound-ish.

As I cross over into the over the hill gang and turn another year closer to my demise, I find that I ache a little bit more. I went out earlier to play basketball with my son, and I made the discovery that I’m not as young as I used to be. Aches and pains in places that never ached or pained before. My shoulder hurts. I’m outta breath and outta shape.

And my mind certainly isn’t what it used to be. We recently moved across town and the other day I placed an order with Amazon and forgot to change the address. So the package is presumably going to the old place, and while it has supposedly been delivered, it seems to be…nowhere.

So I guess I might as well just head back to the couch and blog a little. Or, perhaps, sing…

It’s my birthday, and I’ll blog if I want to
blog if I want to, blog if I want to
You would blog too if  you got old too

Nobody knows where my young age has gone
My body left the same time
Why has my eyesight gone bad
When I should be in my prime

It’s my birthday, and I’ll blog if I want to
blog if I want to, blog if I want to
You would blog too if  you got old too

Writin’ my blog posts, Facebookin’ all night
So leave me alone for a while
‘Til I get my energy back
I’ve got no reason to smile

It’s my birthday, and I’ll blog if I want to
blog if I want to, blog if I want to
You would blog too if  you got old too

My motivation just walked out the door
Sittin’ on my couch like a king
Oh what a birthday surprise
Now I can’t write a thing

It’s my birthday, and I’ll blog if I want to
blog if I want to, blog if I want to
You would blog too if  you got old too

(For those of you who are too young to get the reference, you can sing this song to the tune of Lesley Gore’s “It’s My Party”.)

Anyway, I’m off to celebrate with my family and I promise not to over do it. I’ll pace myself so I don’t pull any muscles or strain anything. Though I might not pace myself too much when we head out for my birthday meal tonight. And as I try to blow out the 39* candles on my cake, I’ll make sure my teeth don’t fly out.

Oh, and if you plan on sending me any presents, don’t make the same mistake I did and send it to the wrong place. Just email me and I’ll make sure you get the correct address.

*Editor’s note: Ken is 39 years old on the metric scale. If you’re not sure how to make the conversion, check with a Canadian.

My birthday is on Valentines -and I *STILL* work! We've always been pretty low-key on birthdays, but I love spending it with family. Since we have a couple birthdays within a few days, we always have a parent sharing a birthday with a daughter...and that works for us.

I do also appreciate the Facebook well-wishes. Some border on the obligatory, and others have genuine humor and sentiment. I reply accordingly, but I reply to all.

I wished you Happy Birthday (and good music) on Facebook, but I'll double up here - Happy Birthday, Ken.

Happy Birthday Ken!  It was so nice to be able to get the reference to Leslie Gore. I felt horrible when Al left her.

Happy Birthday sir!

I Amazon things to the wrong address at least once a year, so you may be off the hook there on blaming your old age

Happy birthday Ken! And don't worry, a step closer to your demise just means you have to bare down and work harder to continuing producing the great content we all love.

Happy birthday, Ken! I hope you have a wonderful day. And also- get it right- it's only you Yanks who are non-metric, which means you are 39 in the rest of the world! Yay!
