How to Manage Your Facebook Business Page

Your Facebook page is a treasure chest. Yes, a treasure chest. It should be filled with great finds, i.e., great content. It shouldn’t be filled with fake coins or lackluster pearls. When you add great content to that treasure chest, you should declare your find. You should put an “x” on the spot.

At least, that’s how I manage my Facebook business page. I have fun with it. I share my content, then I share other content. I share horrible word-nerd jokes and photos. I post interesting articles about business writing and creativity. I even post things that aren’t closely related to Write Right but do show my personality in some way. I don’t worry about scheduling content unless I’m not free to post to Facebook for some reason. I don’t even worry all that much about timing. My content doesn’t really need to be all that concerned with timing; I don’t work in a field that requires I pay attention to holiday sales or meal times. People in those industries do need to be aware of timing, but I don’t think that they should obsess about it. A Facebook page is a treasure chest. People can dig into it if and when they please. They don’t need to be bombarded with flashing lights and neon signs saying that new content is available, although they may appreciate a gentle reminder now and again.

What content – or finds – should be found on your Facebook page?

  • Your content. Your content could be blog posts, videos, photographs, or something else entirely. This content is the bedrock of your treasure chest; thus, you have to create and share your content consistently. Doing so creates expectations, and those expectations will result in your fans digging for it.
  • Other people’s content. Your treasure chest should not be comprised entirely of your content. One, it’s boring. Two, it’s off-putting. If you want to turn your fans into treasure seekers, you have to add some other jewels and coins. Those jewels and coins shouldn’t undercut what you do. They should supplement and enhance it.
  • Fun content. Fun content tends to be timely content, such as Lucas joining Disney. Timely content may be relevant to what you do, but it simply could let your fans get to know you and your business better.

Those three things are what make your Facebook business page a treasure chest. Not one of them; all of them. A treasure chest containing only your content will be left buried in the sand. A treasure chest that contains only fun, fluff pieces may attract an audience, but it won’t lead to dedicated treasure seekers or the fulfillment of business goals. It’s the treasure chests with all three elements that result in engaged and active fans.

@rdopping I doubt that. My page is easier because I have full control over it, and I'm the only one who has to be on board with it. Pages can become complicated when more powers are in play, particularly powers who don't understand or want to understand how to use social media. Some industries are tougher, too, because there isn't a lot of content available or it's content from one dominate source.
