Get to Know Your Customers Better

Ken's Profile on TwitterIf you’re smart, and I know you are, you understand that getting to know your customers and potential customers just a little better might give you an edge over your competition. You see, by getting to know them, and by finding some common ground or something to talk about, you might just win them over. It’s all a part of the customer experience equation. And a lot of the information you want is online.

So I went out on the porch yesterday, dressed in all my finery, in an effort to not only record this video, but to embarrass my family as well. This was a big deal for me as I had to pull myself away from both football and baseball. This is my favorite time of year, not only for the weather, but because the Phils have won their 5th straight division championship and are headed to the playoffs, and the Eagles are starting what I hope will be a great season.

Enjoy the video, and please…don’t be jealous….and if you can’t see the video in your email or RSS feed, click here.

I mentioned a few blog posts in the video, so here are the links:

Laura Petrolino‘s post over at Spin Sucks: Operation Name Drop

Megan Barto‘s guest post here at Inkling Media: Don’t Talk to Me Unless You Do Your Homework.

Hey Ken!

I for one LOVED your outfit. Well, I'm from Philly originally so I pretty much love all the Philly teams. I do have to say that hockey is a religion in my house and my husband is thrilled that pre-season has started. Go Flyers!

Anyway, you illustrated a really good point. I try to remind my clients this all the time. It can be as simple as noticing one of your clients posted a pic of a new puppy. You're a dog lover, also. You make a comment on the picture. BAM--you now have a connection. Build from there.

I'm laughing that your family is mortified you're going out on the porch, because they are worried about the neighbors! No mention of the millions of video viewers globally???

Actually, my husband is really good at this. He is in real estate, and always manages to find some connection or thread that endears clients to him. It helps to have a varied background and to have lived in a lot of places, but as soon as you can establish that connection, people are more likely to do business with you. Love it. and the pj's.

@Lisa Gerber well, i wouldn't say "millions"....maybe..."tens". But yeah, mostly my 19yo son who is a bit more (a LOT more) fashion conscious. He asked "Are you going out there in those??" I said "yes, there's a reason, it's to illustrate something in a video". HIs response "What? What could you possibly illustrate?"

He doesn't get it, kids really don't fully understand what I do. Never read my blog or watch the videos. Well, my daughter sometimes does. And sometimes my 16yo, but never my 19yo.

And the connection thing is key. There is ALWAYS something you can find in common with someone. If you can't find it, keep looking. It's there.

And hope you had a great weekend with your husband in Chicago!
