Bloggers on Pedestals

This guest post is from Jayme Soulati, the president of Soulati Media, Inc. She’s not a power blogger; she doesn’t know if she aspires to be Pedestalone, and she’s pretty happy with the progress of her nearly 1.5-year-old blog Soulati-‘TUDE! Her expertise is squarely at the core of public relations and blended and blurred with marketing and social media.

I’ve been feeling and seeing some angst on the blogosphere lately. Some folks are having a bit of confidence issues; blogs are folding, people are saying their writing does not stack up, and some wonder if being a power blogger is attainable.

What I’m also seeing is that the power bloggers — those who rank higher than the Ad Age Power 50 – are distinctly on a pedestal put there by their peers, themselves, or others in their communities.

This is not intended to be a negative; it’s a fact and it’s what the blogosphere thrives on — leaders. But sometimes leading bloggers are regarded so highly that new bloggers struggle with that influence also wondering whether they can stack up.

If your goal is to become a power blogger, take a look at those who have earned their position. These bloggers are rightly on pedestals. I am always amazed when I see another level of giving, counsel, time, and sharing that is delivered to complete and total strangers in the name of building community, brand and business.

I’ve had the distinct pleasure of meeting Mark Schaefer, Jay Baer, and Gini Dietrich IRL (in real life), and I feel like I’ve met Danny Brown (he is very accessible). These four peeps are to be congratulated for their positions as leaders on the blogosphere.

There is no guidebook how to be a power blogger; it happens over time and with a lot of hard work. In fact, I would suggest power bloggers’ blogs are true extensions and representations of their businesses. When you reach that level, monetization of a blog is moot; it happens automatically, and the blog is the business.

I know how competitive we humanoids are — we want to have the best blog with the most readers, comments, RTs, and highest rankings with awards badges in the margin. We want to have authority and influence, and we want to change the world with our insightful content. I’m certain that each of us will eventually get there, but only if we want to. It’s OK not to be a power blogger, but if you want to be on a pedestal, let me offer you some perspective.

The next time you’re chastising a power blogger for his or her comments, thoughts, opinions, articles, or the way they conduct themselves in their own house, know this:

  • It’s lonely at the top.
  • What I said above–there is no mentor for them to follow and fashion a set of rules after; each of them is writing their own guidebook.
  • We are like paparazzi to them; everything they say, write, do, eat, share, photograph, we want a piece of. They are in the limelight because they sought that position and have earned it.
  • When you feel like attacking as a troll or someone having a bad day, think twice about blogjacking the tone with your drivel.
  • If you’ve ever left a snarky comment, ask yourself whether it was because of envy or jealousy?
  • How many times have you learned from these people about new trends in social media, new apps, new tech, new devices, copied their blog design, or received your invite to Google+ or Spotify? It’s real easy for me to sit back and wait for a power blogger to do the work first with a post that paves the way.
  • Lastly is simply about thanks. Have you ever genuinely recognized a blogger leader for their time, commitment and dedication to teaching you what they know? “Thank you” is a wonderfully unexpected two words.

I’ll say it again, folks, it’s lonely at the top and showing the love is one small courtesy to bloggers on your pedestals. Whether the bloggers you follow have a badge of honor or not doesn’t mean they are any less influential or authoritative. A pedestal can be as short or as tall as you deem.

Crazy week last week so I'm just now conming back - and getting you above 150 comments. :) Isn't it funny we talk about how ridiculous numbers are - in Twitter followers, in Facebook fans, in Klout score - yet we measure success based on numbers. I don't think everyone above 50 in the AdAge ranking is a power blogger. I don't consider myself a power blogger. There are bloggers I admire who aren't ranked because I learn something from them, not because they have high traffic numbers or gigantic engagement.

We all have different goals for blogging. For instance, Marcus, John, and I had a discussion about the 10 blog posts every week you get from Spin Sucks. Marcus wondered, aloud, if it was like having too much sex. But my goal for the blog is very different than his goals for his blog. Danny changed his blogging strategy and he's happier and more engaged now, but his AdAge ranking has decreased.

Someday we'll stop putting people on pedestals for things like numbers. Instead we'll treat each other like human beings and understand that we all have strengths and weaknesses.

It's amazing to me that this sort of deplorable troll behavior has found a place in "adult" society. I used to get zinged by trolls on LiveJournal in HIGH SCHOOL for crying out loud - aren't bloggers supposed to be the grown-up version of LJ-ers? *shakes head*

First off I'm envious your Livefyre works, mine is DOA, who do I need to call at Livefyre to get it to work? It seems it works on everybody's site except mine.

Seriously though, my power bloggers are the same as yours jayme soulati Gini D, Marcus, Mr Brown. Not because of their traffic only, because they have proven time and time again that they aren't living on top of the pedestal but down here with us mortals.

They ABSOLUTELY serve as an inspiration for me. Traffic is nice but it's not a destination in itself. Sure I want more traffic, who doesn't? But I don't want drive-bys, I prefer the relationships built over a longer time period through interacting on blogs.

Great post Soulati | B2B Social Media Marketing ! For me the time of putting any blogger up on a pedastal has long passed. Having said that, there are people I respect for the information they put out and the help they provide all of their readers. That makes them a lot more proactive than a huge amount of people, and I congratulate and thank them for doing so.

This reminds me of a quick story. When I was in the Ruby on Rails world I had the chance to meet David Heinemeier Hansson, the creator of Ruby on Rails. Now here's a guy that created something I built a company on, was able to hire 9 people, and gave me a very nice living. And he has done the same for thousands of other people. He is also a brilliant programmer, especially compared to my skills, or lack thereof. When I had the chance to talk with him I didn't know what to say to him. But he was cool with it. Later on he spoke at my conference and I found him to be a very down to earth regular guy, despite being a big name in web development and business. After speaking with him I stopped putting people on pedestals.

However as I've said that doesn't mean I don't look up them and what they've accomplished. But the pedestal thing makes the relationship heavily lopsided.

Love how you asked for blog urls of some people in the comments--one sure way to grow!

First one I've seen written like this about power bloggers, and you had me nodding humbly with each point. 'Strue, we do kind of wait on the big guys to churn out the latest and greatest (because they do), and then blame them for daring to have ambitions and goals (the ones we have), and lean on them for publicity favors and get excited to hear of their "dramas" among each other, but not as excited as we do to have our names mentioned in the same sentence as theirs. 'Sall true.

I've said before that I'm nothing if not a rebel, and that makes me a bit leery of a crowd, but the simple fact is, I want one, too. The other simple fact is, the people you've mentioned (and a couple others I've interacted with) have won their crowds for very good personal and professional reasons. Word spreads fast around here: you don't get to be a closet know-nothing jerk on the blogosphere.

So it's with pleasure that I join the crowds I do when I do, there not just to stick my hand out and wave but to learn, grow, contribute, and benefit, which is what both me and that A-lister really wants in the end.
