On the Porch (Beach Edition): Businesses Don’t Go On Vacation

by Ken on August 15, 2011 · 20 comments

Ocean Isle Beach, NCI’m currently on vacation at the beach but that’s no reason to not continue blogging and shooting videos.

In fact, since this weekly feature is usually recorded on a porch, I figured I might as well do it from one of the porches here at the place we’re staying in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

And, this gives me a perfect chance to talk about the fact that while you go on vacation, your business doesn’t. My friend Marijean Jaggers discussed this a little bit while she was at the beach last month with Seven Ways to Manage Social Media When You’re Out of the Office. She even gave her readers a little bit of the beach.

So I decided to dig a little deeper and give my take on how to handle the fact that while you may go on vacation, your business doesn’t. Enjoy the video and enjoy a little bit of my time at the beach..

If you can’t see the video, click here to view.

When you go away, make sure you choose someone to be in control of your Social Media and make sure they understand how to handle things like Facebook.

And please subscribe to my YouTube channel so you can gain access to all of my videos.

How do you handle your Social Media while you’re away on vacation or business trips?

The beach is always a good spot to vacation or work at- or so I maintain.

Non-sequitur comment Ken, but on your next vacation try Ocracoke Island on the Outer Banks of NC - the ferry ride to the island is in itself a vacation....

ExoCreative well, this is a longstanding family vacation. I don't have a lot of say in where we go...

Ocean Isle is great - spent many summers there too...enjoy the calabash style seafood... KenMueller

ExoCreative Thanks, we eat there every year. Got any recommendations? I'm sick of the same place every time!

No..., been too many years now - spent the last 10 years in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill - reccos there, but not so much for Ocean Isle and Sunset... KenMueller

Hey Ken!

Great to see you enjoying yourself! I like to set up an auto message in my Gmail that starts about a week or two before I'm going away. It will give clients all the details about what to expect in my absence and how much contact I will have with them when I'm gone. Then there are no surprises when I'm not there.

aliciamjay great idea!

I think tomorrow's post will riff off your's Ken. I think you gave some great tips in the video. However, for me, when I go on vacation, that's it. I'm not going to blog, tweet (except fun stuff and when I want to), etc. That's not part of my down time. And I've learned this the hard way!

Shonali Ha, well, I'm still getting paid while I'm down here as I do a few things for a few clients. And I like to keep the traffic going to my website, so that's why I blog. Also, I find all this very relaxing, so it's not like work!

It's also a symptom of loving what you do -- neither you nor I really want to be away from work for long, do we?

OIB is my all time FAVORITE beach. It's where we vacationed for my entire childhood and then into adulthood. Sadly, my parents sold their place in 2008 and we now go to Southport. Enjoy your time there and walk on the beach for me!! BTW, you're staying at the very end of the beach where our family house was (caught a glimpse from the video)!

Nice post Ken, it got me thinking about what I'm going to do when I go to Korea this Fall. Nice to see that you get to enjoy the beach. It is a little tough watching these beach scenes from the office though!

BestRoofer Thanks, Joe. I bet you could get a lot of pictures, and even videos, of how roofs in Korea are similar or different from the types of roofs we have here! All sorts of ideas
