Inbound Marketing: Viral Marketing & World Wide Raves

Inbound marketing and Social Media are based heavily upon connections and online word-of-mouth. The idea is for someone online to find something they like and then share it with others, who in turn will share it with others. At some point there is the chance that what starts as a small case of word-of-mouth might eventually go viral. We’ve all heard of viral videos and ad campaigns…something so creative and compelling that it resonates with a lot of people.

No boundaries….geographical or otherwise.

In this week’s class (#5 in the series), we hear from David Meerman Scott, author of The New Rules of Marketing and PR: How to Use Social Media, Blogs, News Releases, Online Video, and Viral Marketing to Reach Buyers Directly, 2nd Edition. He discusses the concept of viral marketing and what he refers to as creating a “world wide rave.”

A few key points that I took away from this particular class are:

  • We must earn attention
  • On the web, we are what we publish
  • We need to encourage sharing, or what he refers to as “word of mouse”
  • Nobody cares about your product except for you!
  • We need to be willing to lose control (in the way the Grateful Dead encouraged people to bootleg their shows)
  • We need to manage our fear of what might happen online

You can watch the class here, or visit our free Educational Resources page and attend all of Hubspot‘s Inbound Marketing University‘s seminars in order to become an Inbound Marketing Certified Professional. The courses are free and will help prepare you to become better at helping others find your business online.

And if you are interested in learning more, you can contact us for hands on educational help or to speak to your business or group.
