When it comes to Social Media there is no shortage of social platforms. But two of the most popular and successful platforms for business purposes are Facebook and LinkedIn. They are very different platforms that can be used in very different ways, but can also be rather compatible. I think that in the months to come we’ll start to see much more integration between these two platforms, in much the same way that Twitter works seamlessly with both Facebook and LinkedIn.
My friend Paul Chaney has described LinkedIn as your business suit, while Facebook is more business casual (and Twitter is that after hours networking mixer). A big part of being successful in business is knowing the appropriate attire for specific occasions. And the same goes for how we utilize and interact with others on various social platforms. These are two different platforms with two different objectives; but they can work very well together.
In this class from Hubspot’s Inbound Marketing University (the 4th in our weekly series) we hear from Elyse Tager of the Silicon Valley American Marketing Association. She describes the many uses of Facebook and LinkedIn and gives us some solid principals on how to get started.
One caveat on this class: much has changed on both of these platforms (particularly Facebook) since this webinar was recorded. As a result, some of the information is dated, but the principals still hold true. Of all the seminars in this series, this is the one I would love to see updated by the folks at IMU.
I think one of the most important lessons in this class is the need to play around with these platforms and get used to them before you jump in for the purpose of business. I’ve seen too many people who are unfamiliar with these platforms, particularly Facebook, create a Facebook business page before they are comfortable with using the network for their own personal uses. The personal must come first.
