10 Ways to Promote and Share the Social Media Love

Hi, my name’s Ken and I’m a sharer.

Hi, Ken!

Actually, I’m not ashamed of being a sharer. I kind of thrive on it. And I really don’t want to get over it.

If I find something I like…a book…a band…a restaurant….anything…I share. I tell others about it. I’m quick to retweet a link I like. I’m fast on the “like” or “share” buttons on Facebook. And I don’t do it randomly or indiscriminately. I do it because I believe in what I’m sharing

Last year I got a Facebook message from a friend asking me, “how many of those links and pages that you share on Twitter and Facebook are clients of yours?”

I had to answer honestly and say that almost none of them were. People don’t pay me to retweet and like things. I do that on my own. If I truly like something I feel compelled to share.

A recent Harris poll indicates that we love to use Social Media to tell others what we think. The poll shows that 26% of us use Social Media to express our dissatisfaction with a brand or product, while 23% of us use those same platforms to sing the praises of those we like.

But while those numbers are rather similar, I believe we tend to be much more prone to negativity. We spend a lot of time voicing our opinions when we don’t like something, but why not turn the tables?

Let someone know when you DO like something. If you get good customer service, leave a big tip. Express your thanks. Spread the word and share the love. Go the extra mile and tell their manager!

Let’s try to spend more time promoting that which is good, and less time harping on the negative. I love using Social Media outlets to thank others for good things. In fact, just last night my wife and I celebrated our anniversary by dining out at a local restaurant that we had been wanting to try for a long time. The restaurant, John J. Jeffries, features meals prepared from fresh, local, organic food. Our experience was incredible, so when I got home I made sure I talked them up on Twitter and Facebook, and even thanked them on their Facebook business page. Restaurants must get a lot of complaints, so how refreshing must it be to get a public compliment?

So if you want to do good and promote positivity, follow these simple steps:

  1. Retweet on Twitter
  2. Share on Facebook
  3. Like on Facebook
  4. Link to blogs and articles
  5. Comment on blogs or Facebook
  6. Forward emails
  7. Suggest to friends on Facebook
  8. Invite to Facebook events
  9. Review on Yelp, Amazon, etc.
  10. …and…start all over again

Anyone can complain (we all do it, and there are times when it’s warranted), but I’d rather take the positive approach and promote the good things in life.

Agreed, Joshua. And goodness knows, I love to complain myself when things go wrong. Positive word of mouth is the best kind of marketing there is. If a business goes out of their way to create a great product and provide good service, they should be rewarded for it.

Great post! If we are willing to rant when things go wrong, then it only makes sense to give praise where it's due! That's just fair. People/businesses should benefit from exposure if they're doing a great job.
