Meet my friends Sara and Kirsten.
They are both members of the amazing community of friends that I have met as the result of Social Media…primarily Twitter.
What sets these two apart is that Kirsten and Sara are among the five or so friends who will be giving birth in the near future. For these two, it could actually happen at any moment.
The other thing that sets them apart is that both of them plan on tweeting throughout the process. They have both set up special Twitter accounts for the occasion, so that the squeamish among us don’t have to follow along if we don’t want to.
Now, as a father who was there for the birth of his three children, I know that things don’t always go as planned, so who knows whether these two will be able to follow through as planned. But in the meantime, here’s a little bit of context so you can follow along.
Kirsten will be tweeting under the name @LilBabyDeeds . This will be her first child (though she has two older adopted sons). She’ll be going the traditional route by having the baby in the hospital. Her due date is May 10th, but has been tweeting lately on her personal account about some occasional contractions…so we’ll see.
Sara, on the other hand, will be going through a much different experience. She’ll be tweeting at @WelcomeBabyE. This is her second child, and her due date is April 28th. While her first child was born in the hospital, Sara will be having this baby at home with the assistance of two midwives and a doula.
Oh, and one other thing. Both Sara and Kirsten are rather…open…and spunky. Neither of them has much of a filter, so be prepared. They are wonderful people, and what you see is truly what you get, which is a big part of their charm. So if you decide to join our community in following them on this journey, just be forewarned. I have no idea what to expect from their tweets!
For our part, as friends and members of the local Twitter community, I hope they don’t decide to have their babies in the middle of the night when most of us will be asleep. I think this has the potential to be an amazing experience, and one that exists solely because of Social Media and it’s ability to create communities.
I’ll report back later once Sara and Kirsten have delivered these two new members of our community, and let you know how it went. But feel free to follow their Twitter accounts along with us!
Can you think of any other unique uses of Twitter that would add to our sense of community?
