Weekend Music Game: Valentine Edition

From time to time we like to lighten things up and play what we call the Weekend Music Game. It’s an exercise in community and viral sharing. Many of us discover new music through our friends, particularly via Social Media. So let’s see if we can learn about some new music.

Here’s the game: Put your iTunes/iPod/MP3 Player or other music player on random/shuffle mode. Then take the first two songs, no skipping, and list them here.

And since this is the Valentine’s Day edition, let’s make it a bit more fun. The first song you get, is the song that played (or will play) on your first date. The second song is the song that played (or will play) at your wedding. This could end up being poignant, funny, or just plain…wrong.

And then you get to throw in a third song. Your choice…but a song that you feel represents your spouse or significant other, or someone special in your life. Maybe it’s “your song” or just a song that reminds you of them. But that one you get to choose.

Ok so here goes mine:

First Date: One Step Closer by U2

Wedding: Romeo & Juliet by Dire Straits

wow, that turned out pretty well for me, and nothing embarrassing.

Song that reminds me of my wife: Van Morrison – Brown Eyed Girl – we both love this song, and it’s even her ring tone. And…yes…she has brown eyes.

Alright, so there’s my list. Have at it: pull out your music and comment below with your list! And come back often to see what other folks say…you might learn about some new music, learn something about a friend, or…just get a good laugh.

This made me laugh.

First Date: Foolish Games by Jewel
Probably actually a good song for the first date of a long relationship because you'll always confuse each other somehow at some point.

Wedding: The Darkest Hour by Brother
There are no lyrics to this song and I think the music would have made a few family members wonder what was behind curtain #2.

The 3rd random song was Praying for Time by George Michael. This is not a song I would list as "reminds me of my husband" no matter how much I like it.

The one song that will always remind me of my husband is The Devil Went Down to Georgia, because it's the one song he will actually sing in front of other people. And enjoy it.

What if you're not technologically advanced enough to have an ipod or romantically advanced enough to have a honey? then what?

First date: Grumpus by Lambchop
It's a wonder she went out with me again.

Wedding song: Everyday Is Like Sunday by Morrissey
My sister-in-law would have liked this - my wife, not so much.

Reminds me of my wife: I Want You To Be My Love by Over the Rhine
1. It's her favorite band and 2. She walked down the aisle to this song.

First Date: "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?" ~ Moby
Strangely ironic (but that's a story for another time and place)
Wedding: "Everything" ~ Collective Soul
Odd choice really

Reminds me of my hubby:
Since he already took mine, I feel stupid saying "This Night" by Billy Joel, but it does remind me of him. There are many other songs too, but I don't have the time or space to list them all here.

Love you, Sweetheart! Happy Valentine's Day!

First date: Riding Horses (Score to Brokeback Mountain), Gustavo Santaolalla. Uh, it's gorgeous music, but the movie is not first-date territory.

Wedding song: Don't Feel Your Touch, Bruce Cockburn. Uh, not a good message to send on your wedding.

Reminds me of my wife: Have I Told You Lately, but Van Morrsison's original version. So much better than the schmaltzy cover that Rod Stewart did.

OK, here goes:

Frist Date: Fall For Anything by the Script. I guess I'm a cheap date.
Wedding Song: Typical Situation by Dave Matthews (Everybody's happy, everybody's free ...)
Last Song: So many to choose from ... today I think it will be Falling Slowly by Glen Hansard from the Once soundtrack. It's breathtaking.

Yeah, Jeff. I love that Steve Taylor album and song...but...wow.

Keep the songs coming folks!

First Date: "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" by Journey. Yes, seriously.

Wedding: "Svengali" by Steve Taylor. Erm...that's kinda messed up. Really.

Reminds Me of My Wife: "This Night" by Billy Joel. Danced to this at our wedding, and on (or about) our 10th Anniversary. Plan to continue to do so for many landmark occasions hereafter. :)

Took me long enough ;)

FIRST DATE: There Might Be a Light - Jars of Clay
Kind of perfect for a first date, talking about someone falling in love with someone else. "Sparks and hearts, they have to glow."

WEDDING: All I Have - Mat Kearney
If Mat wasn't talking about being heartbroken, this would be total perfection. "All I have, you know it's yours. Every breathe, every step, every moment."

REMINDS ME OF MY HUSBAND: Don't Stop Believin' - Journey
This was hard to pick because I center a lot of my memories around music, so 90% of my music reminds me of Kris and something we've done together. I picked this one because we've been singing it at the top of our lungs every time we've ever gone on a road trip for the past 5 years. Including at least 50 trips to Penn State :)

Thanks for making me feel all gushy in love, Ken. :-p

FIRST DATE: Love Don't Cost A Thing - Jennifer Lopez
WEDDING: Whatcha Say - Jason Derulo
REMINDS ME OF THE HUSBAND: Psycho Killer - Talking Heads

This was my actual 3 first random songs and I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry! Fun game, thanks!

First Date: Drake - Houstatlantavegas
Wedding: The Lonely Island - Natalie's Rap

Third song is shuffled too
Galactic - Fanfare

First Date: Steady as She Goes by The Raconteurs
Wedding: The Young Ones by Munich

Apparently the music Gods are not smiling on me today, because those two songs have some seriously messed up implications in this context. Especially the first one, which is about the trap of settling down to keep up appearances.

Song that reminds me of my wife: Wake Up by the Arcade Fire

This is obviously not a traditional love song, but she absolutely adores it first of all. Second of all, I see this song as being about the importance of feeling things authentically during our lives. I think in a strange way it's very affirming. When we come to the end of our lives, what is more important that the love we've shared?
