4 Things You Need To Know About Everything

Here’s everything you need to know about Social Media. Well, not everything per se. But, the rules of Social Media are changing rapidly…and this is where we’re headed. So here’s what you need to know about everything:

Everything is Social – gone are the days of static web sites. With Facebook Connect and other sharing applications, more and more websites are becoming a part of this thing we call “Social Media.” The lines are being blurred, and this is a good thing. It means the web is becoming more like real life. Soon, every web site or destination will be a social site in some way.

Everything is local – From Google on down, our online experiences are getting more local. Searching for something in Lancaster returns different results than searching from New York City. This presents some interesting challenges in terms of SEO: do you focus on local? or beyond? But it certainly levels the playing field for smaller businesses.

Everything is mobile – Some estimate that 80% of all web surfing will be done via mobile devices by the year 2020. According to a new study from GroundTruth, more than 60% of mobile page views are to social networking sites. Facebook estimates that more than 65-million of its active users access the site via mobile devices. Newer geolocation platforms like Foursquare and Gowalla are predicated upon heavy mobile use. This means that fears about Internet users being isolated in their homes are greatly exaggerated. As mobile technologies advance and see increased adoption rates, we will be more connected while less tethered.

Everything is personal – If everything is social, local, and mobile, it makes it easier for everything to become more customizable. Everyone’s Internet experience will be different. Your Google search for local “restaurants” will be different than my search, even if we live next door to each other. Our surfing experience is also become more customizable on both macro- and micro-levels. Web sites remember us, and our experience while visiting them is becoming increasingly unique to us and our situation.

So now you know Everything. What will you do with that knowledge?
