Social Media as Preventive Medicine

Those in the medical profession don’t just treat sick people. They practice something known as “preventive medicine”. The idea is to help your patients stay healthy and prevent them from getting sick, thereby keeping them away from the doctor’s office.

If you’re in business and you have a blog or use other forms of social media, this is exactly the sort of thing you should be doing: preventive medicine.  Don’t blog directly about your business, but blog about the things that help your customers stay away from your business.

Huh?

Think about it.

If you’re a jeweler, tell people how they can properly clean and maintain their own jewelry so they won’t have to bring it to you for repairs.

If you’re an auto mechanic, tell people how to properly maintain their cars so they won’t need to bring them in for repairs.

If you’re an accountant, give people tax advice and tips on how to take care of their own financial activities so that they might not need to call you.

I could give numerous examples from any type of profession, but you get the point.

By giving customers and potential customers REAL practical advice that they can count on, you will earn their trust.

And when the time comes when they actually need a jeweler, or mechanic, or accountant…to whom do you think they’ll turn?

Exactly. And THAT is the point.
